Handmade Coffee Rituals
There are those people who are addicted to the ritual of making coffee. They like the steps, the complicated bits and the pleasure of a great cup of coffee comes from as much from the ritual as from the drinking of the end product. The exact ritual can vary depending on the person and where there are, but the desired effect is the same: a perfect cup of hot, rich, fresh coffee. “Perfect,” of course, is completely subjective.
Among coffee afficionados, there will always be a lot of disagreement in many areas, for example
- which beans,
- bean roasting,
- bean grinding,
- concentration of the grounds,
- whether the coffee should be infused into the water by dripping, steeping, or steaming
- and many other details.
However one thing that many seem to agree on is that if you want coffee done right, you must make it by hand, with a great deal of care and attention to detail.
Coffee Technology and Precision
Now moving on over to the other kind of coffee guru, those who prefer perfect coffee with as little effort as possible. These people have been delighted in recent years to an amazing wave of technology that allows them to, ahem, have their coffee and and drink it too. Welcome in the era of the Super Automatic Coffee Maker!
A superautomatic coffee machine uses the pressurized steam method of coffee production to make a single cup of coffee at a time, but without any of the manual steps. With the press of a single button, the machine
- grinds the beans,
- tamps them down into the filter,
- passes steam through them into your cup
- then ejects the used grounds.
The whole process takes less than a minute, and it produces a wonderfully rich, delicious coffee. Most super automatic coffee makers allow you to adjust a wide variety of settings, such as
- the amount of coffee grounds per cup,
- the coarseness of the grind,
- the volume of coffee produced and
- the temperature of the coffee.
With such effortless repeatability and fine control, it’s easy to see why super automatic coffee makers have become so popular in recent years.
Which type are You?
As for myself, I think, as usual I don’t fit into either category. I love my Sunday morning drip coffee that I make by hand. I love the smell of the grounds and always inhale as I scoop some out. Then I like watching the grounds swell up and do their thing as I plan the day’s activities.
But then, on weekdays when I have less time, it’s a joy to just dash into the kitchen and flick a switch and let it do its thing, then when I come back there’s this incredible rich aroma in the room and a beautiful cup of coffee waiting for me.
