What’s a Barista, Exactly?

A barista (from the Italian for “bartender”) is a person, usually a coffee-house employee, who prepares and serves espresso-based coffee drinks. Many coffee shops officially use the title for their coffee makers. The role of a barista is to have enough knowledge of the entire process of making coffee. This knowledge includes

  • the correct operation, maintenance and programming of the machine,
  • grinding and tamping methods,
  • extraction times,
  • water temperature and quality,
  • micro milk frothing, free pouring,
  • latte art,
  • bean roasting,
  • coffee plant cultivation,
  • drying methods,
  • correct storage,
  • renewable methods of disposal and recycling of the coffee and packaging used.

Who knew it was so complicated?
Anyway, it’s get even more intense than that, every year there’s a world barista chamionship for the most passionate barista.

Perhaps after you buy your superautomatic coffee maker, you’ll get so in to coffee culture that you’ll immerse yourself in the world of coffee and answer only to the title “Mista Barista”? Well then again, perhaps not…!
